One of our employees was off work last week as a member of his partners family had died. He rang his manager the evening before and said it was likely he would not be in the next day (and I also think he rang to confirm this in the morning).
He now wants to take this day as sick however we feel this would be holiday/unpaid leave? His view is he had a sleepless night and that along with the stres of the loss meant he was therefore not well enough to come to work.
Any advice or previous experience with this situation would be helpful.
The company does have a compassionate leave policy however this is not applicable in this case due to the relationship with the deceased.
Thanks
