Contingent Staff definition

Contingent staff are those that work in casual employment.  There’s no general consensus on what defines contingent staff but generally the working arrangements will be less formal than for permanent staff and may be played out on an ad hoc basis i.e. without contracts and consistent working hours.

Contingent workers are very popular in industries with fluctuating seasonal demand – retail firms, for example, take on a number of employees in the run up to Christmas.

Some of the qualities that may define contingent employment include lack of a contract, part-time hours, low job security and informal pay arrangements (e.g. cash in hand).
