Attrition definition

A gradual, employee-instigated reduction of workforce numbers who are not replaced (often due to lack of funds), leading to an overall decrease in the number of employees. Often incorrectly used to mean any long-term sizable loss of employees, but the crucial differentiator is that the impetus for the reduction comes from the employees – such as through resignation or retirement – and that the numbers are not made up.
