HR Tip: Fixed term contracts and unfair dismissal at termination

Question: "If I engage someone on a fixed term contract can I thereby prevent them from claiming unfair dismissal when their work comes to an end?"

HR Tip: No, it is no longer possible for you to do this. When a fixed term contract comes to an end on an appointed date, a dismissal takes place and the person has the same right as any employee with one year of service to claim unfair dismissal. You therefore need to have a fair reason for not continuing the employment, which may well be redundancy.
