HR tip: Christmas overtime rates?

pp_default1

These questions are being answered by Learn HR, a market leader in the provision of HR and payroll training and nationally-recognised professional qualifications.

Question:

What rates of overtime are payable for working on Christmas Day and Boxing Day?

Reply:

Unless you are subject to some form of collective agreement that determines these matters, the matter is entirely up to you. Some employers pay double time for work on those days. Other employers who operate shift working pay a fixed rate regardless of hours or dates. You really need to decide what you will have to pay to encourage people to work on those days.
