Question: “Can we discipline an employee because he has a bad attitude?”

HR Tip:
“Bad attitude” is in itself not adequate grounds for disciplinary action. You need to be more specific. Talk to the man, explain what you perceive as the problems and try to get him to recognise and do something about them. If he does not respond satisfactorily then you can take disciplinary action but you must give clear examples of how this bad attitude shows itself and adversely affects work. For example it may be that he is surly with customers, or is always grumbling or complaining about the company, or is constantly critical in a negative way of ideas his colleagues table in meetings. None of us are perfect and we all can be miseries at times but you are entitled to take action if employees’ behaviour or attitude interferes with the smooth running of the organisation. But I repeat, you must show clear examples.

    You could also consider some one-to-one coaching to find out the reason behind the behaviour. Perhaps the employee is unhappy in some way. Some training in developing a positive mental attitude could also help.
