HR tip: Booking holidays

Question:

"We have had a flurry of applications for holiday from employees who have booked to go abroad. Some other employees are showing resentment because, they say, they don't yet know when they will want their holidays and do not want to be fenced in. What is the best way of dealing with this problem that seems to get worse every year?"

HR tip:

An obvious way to deal with applications would be on a first come, first served basis. However this will not work if you have a batch of applications all at once. Another approach therefore might be to ask for holiday applications to be made during a one-week period around the beginning of the holiday year, and then, taking them all together at the end of that week, arrange them as fairly as you can. People who have not taken part in this rush but request holidays subsequently will have to be slotted in. You really should insist that holidays must be taken at times that are not inconvenient to the organisation.

    Employees should not be booking holidays abroad or at home either until they have been authorised to take the leave from work. What would they do if you said they could not have the holiday on the dates they wanted?
