Some good points Simon. However, I think most retailers realised a while back they need to look after their employees. John Lewis has led the way for sometime on this front.
With the rise of HR Analytics, its now easier to demonstrate ROI for investment in people. Certainly, a more data-driven recruitment process helps retailers identify the best candidates, reduces turnover and improves productivity.

I fully agree with James. Employers need to re-imagine the recruitment process - focus on assessing candidate's transferable skills, 'coachability' and cultural fit with their organisation. Rather than focusing on CVs, which are after all, nothing more than a historical record written by the subject of the document.

Great article Jo, nicely sums up the importance of culture fit when recruiting. Employers need to explain, and more importantly demonstrate in everything they do, the true culture of the organisation. This ensures candidates buy in to your ethos and values. Having a consistent, well articulated message is therefore important.
