Some great points in here Shaun. January can be a crucial time for businesses as it's the start of a new year, new targets, you don't want to be spending the first few months replacing staff that have left!

Great points Mark.
The first step is as you say, creating a goal. Without one you have nothing to work towards which I think is one of the main problems in workers today.
Some people might need an extra push and it's up to the managers to have constant contact with staff to ensure they are happy and being challanged.
