The Partnership Institute: Consultant Profiles

Alan Cave has been actively involved in the development of partnership arrangements in a number of organisations, including the Co-operative Bank, the Inland Revenue, and, most recently, EDS. Alan has been a management consultant for 13 years, formerly with Coopers and Lybrand and then with Kinsley Lord. His consultancy practice focuses on supporting organisations undergoing significant change. Alan has written and lectured extensively on organisational change, workplace relations and management practices.

Anjali Arya has substantial experience of working across the public and voluntary sectors in managing diversity, performance management and change management. Her expertise is in working with senior managers, front line staff and trade unions to formulate appropriate HR policies and solutions. Prior to moving into consultancy, Anjali was in strategic and operational human resource development in local government.

Ann Gilbert is a trainer and facilitator, with wide ranging experience of working with unions and managers in the public and private sectors. Ann is currently employed by Northern College, one of the UK’s adult residential colleges, and develops customised training programmes for unions and employers in skills for partnership.

Bill Kerr has worked in management and organisational development for the past twenty years. Since 1988 he has worked as a senior consultant within ABA Management Consultants. He has worked on a range of consultancy assignments with major private sector companies such as SmithKline Beecham, Zurich Financial Services, HSBC and Marks & Spencer. In addition he has extensive experience in working with local authorities.

Bob Purkiss is an independent consultant with a long track record of working within organisations on best practice in equality. He is a commissioner at the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), and was for eleven years the National Secretary for Equalities at the Transport and General Workers Union. Bob’s experience lies in advising unions and managers on the development of joint strategies for managing diversity.

Dave Eva has worked in the trade union movement for many years. He has been at the forefront of the development of partnerships between unions and management on training and learning. Dave is Coordinator of the North West TUC Bargaining for Skills project, where he manages a large team of staff who provide advisory and training services to organisations on partnerships for learning.

Denis Gregory works as a consultant on industrial relations and partnership working. Over the last decade he has supported a number of joint union-management partnerships, including ones at 3M, Scottish Power, Vertex, National Grid and Anglian Water. His focus is on the initial exploration of partnership in response to complex change programmes. He places significant emphasis on the development of partnership skills and competences. Denis is a lecturer in industrial relations at Ruskin College, Oxford.

Frances Graham has been involved in consultancy and training for large and small employers in the private, public and voluntary sectors for the last twenty years. Frances has developed a unique approach to undertaking organisational reviews and training needs analysis, through partnerships involving management, trade union representatives and employees. She is Chief Executive of Workbase Training, a charity which specialises in training and development for non-managerial employees.

Ian Weare has managed organisational change programmes in a wide range of business sectors, including aerospace, food and drink and the car industry. Major private sector clients include Ford Motor Company, LucasVarity, Rank Hovis and British Petroleum. His assignments involve major organisational and cultural change, focused on delivering business benefits through the active involvement of employees, managers and trade unions.

Jane Farrell has extensive experience of working at all levels of organisations on employment and equalities issues. She has designed and delivered management training, change management seminars and taught widely on negotiation skills, equality issues and recruitment and selection. Jane is joint Managing Director of Equality Works, a consultancy and training company.

Jane Keep has over twenty years experience of working in and around the NHS including extensive work as a senior practitioner in HR, organisational development, and change management. Her focus is on working across all professions, in complex operating environments, looking at organisational and cross-organisational structures, workplace relationships, processes and systems, and dealing with conflict. Jane is also a teacher, writer and researcher in organisational development and change, both nationally and internationally.

Dr Jane Pillinger works as an independent consultant and policy advisor, specialising in equal opportunities, working time and employment issues. She has worked extensively with trade unions in the UK, Ireland and in Europe on equality, partnership, working time and employment issues. Jane is a Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Select Committee on Employment.

Jeff Rodrigues is a senior consultant in organisational development and change management with over a decade of consulting experience. His clients have included senior managers in public service agencies in health, central and local government and the independent sector. His work with trade union clients has involved restructuring, capacity building and performance management. Prior to consultancy, Jeff was a senior manager in the civil service.

John Daly has been actively involved in human resource development as a consultant, facilitator, and trainer for many years. He works with a range of public and private sector organisations at both strategic and operational level to facilitate change and improve relations between unions and managers. Before moving into consultancy, John was employed by the Engineering Employers’ Federation as a Senior Industrial Relations Executive.

John Taylor is a consultant and trainer, currently employed by the Aberdeen Business School. He has extensive experience as a trainer in employee relations and management development. John’s career has included twelve years with ACAS as a Senior Industrial Relations Executive. Current consultancy assignments include a number of management development programmes in the private sector.

Karen Picking works as a consultant specialising in organisational development throughout the NHS and the public sector. She has substantial experience of partnership working and staff involvement, trust mergers, top team development, implementation of the NHS plan, and PCT and Health Authority development. Karen previously worked as Director of Organisational Development for South Tees Acute Hospital NHS Trust.

Kate Brown is an experienced trainer, specialising in joint training programmes for unions and employers. She has substantial experience of training needs analysis and delivering training programmes in a range of skills to trade union representatives and managers. Her previous experience includes ten years as a trade union education tutor with Wirral Metropolitan College and work with the TUC North West Bargaining for Skills project.

Keith Gibson has for the past ten years worked as an independent HR consultant, specialising in new working practices, partnership agreements, best practice benchmarking, and new approaches to management/employee relations. Keith has some twenty five years’ experience within manufacturing, and works with many other industries, including aerospace, print, pharmaceuticals and food production.

Martin Bamford has worked extensively with trade unions and employers as an academic and consultant, specialising in business strategy and planning, team building, people development and structured problem solving. Martin’s career has spanned a wide range of consultancy projects where he has worked with employers and trade unions to enable them to manage conflict positively. Before becoming a consultant, Martin was manager of the TUC National Education Centre’s training services for trade unions.

Norman Haslam joins the TUC Partnership Institute after a long career in employee relations in the private sector. Norman works as a freelance consultant in industrial relations, human resource management, and change management. He has had a range of senior positions in industry which have involved significant change management in ‘brownfield’ organisations. Norman was formerly Employee Relations Director for both Rover and British Aerospace.

Paul Hitchcock has ten years experience as a consultant, working on major change projects with a range of clients, including Ford Motor Company. His emphasis is on supporting organisations in creating the strategic link between business performance and personal development. Paul formerly worked for Allied Domecq plc where he had responsibility for senior executive development on a global basis. Paul is currently working for the TUC Partnership Institute on a project with Barclays Bank and UNIFI.

Peter Reilly is a Principal Research Fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies, where he is engaged in a wide range of projects on employee relations. Peter has acted as an expert facilitator on a number of joint management/union projects, both in the private and public sector. He has a keen interest in the changing nature of relationships at work reflected in a recently published book - Flexibility at Work: Balancing the Interests of Employer and Employee. Peter previously had a 16 year career with Shell in personnel management.

Sarah Messenger has worked in industrial relations for twelve years, first as a personnel manager then as a union official for the NUT and UNIFI. She played a key role in negotiating the Partnership Agreement between UNIFI and Barclays Bank. Sarah works as an independent consultant, specialising in partnerships, flexible working, equality and organisational change.

Sherine Maas is an experienced consultant in the field of people and organisational management. She has worked on a range of consultancy projects with organisations, where she has supported groups of employees, directors and managers to work together effectively on the management of change. Sherine was previously the Human Resources Director at North London Training and Enterprise Council, and, prior to that, worked as an Industrial Relations Manager with ACAS, providing conciliation services in national disputes.

Virginia Branney is an employment relations consultant and trainer, and an accredited mediator. She works with unions and employers on a wide range of issues, including job evaluation, equality, and single status implementation. Prior to becoming a consultant, Virginia was Deputy Head of Local Government at UNISON. She had a lead role in the negotiation of the national single status agreement and the development of the local government job evaluation scheme.
