All IT recruitment roads lead to London

pp_default1

London is the place to be if you want to pick up a new job in IT, according to new research from jobs site CWjobs.co.uk.

The second quarter of 2011 is the eighth consecutive quarter of increasing demand for IT jobseekers, with developer roles making up 39 per cent of all jobs advertised in the UK. A total of 37,000 IT jobs were advertised in Q2 2011 in London alone according CWjobs.

London already accounts for 33 per cent of all UK IT jobs advertised. That’s only likely to increase as the government advances its plans for east London’s Tech City. Prime minister David Cameron announced plans in November last year to invest £200 million in new tech and innovation centres to create a technology hub in London’s Shoreditch in an attempt to rival the success of Silicon Valley in the US.

“It’s promising to see that the government’s investment in the IT sector is being reflected in the recruitment market," said Richard Nott, web site director at CWJobs. "The quality of IT candidates in the UK is extremely high and often underestimated, so, by positioning London at the centre of the technology world, we hope students, graduates and IT specialists will be inspired to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.”

While developer roles appear to have benefitted most from the surge in vacancies, SQL, C, C#, Java and .NET continue to be the top five most sought-after skills for both permanent and contract positions. Agile skills saw an increase in demand of 9 percent in the first quarter.
