Genetic discrimination refers to unequal treatment of employees because of a gene mutation that may put them at a greater risk of inherited disorders than the general population. Evidence of genetic testing in medical records may increase the risk of genetic-based discrimination. According to the New York Times, some people are putting off genetic testing out of fear it will be used against them when they apply for insurance or a new job.

Some companies may require people to undergo genetic testing during the recruitment process in order to ascertain if they will be at a greater risk from inherited disorders than the general population.
