Is my employer obliged to pay for a changed prescription for my spectacles? I have worked for them for two years, with almost constant VDU use, and my eyesight has changed markedly.

I know they are obliged to pay for the eyesight test from the HSE site, but the legislation involved goes on about employers paying the basic cost of ‘special corrective appliances’ and the like, i think meaning glasses. I think this does apply to people with glasses already – is this the case?

At previous employers, a contribution has been made to the cost of a new prescription. I know on the dole you get a sum towards new glasses. But my employer will only pay for an eye test.

So in short, is it that my employer can effectively blind me through excessive VDU use, and only have to pay for an eye test?
